After startup, the D500S runs self-tests and turns off automatically if too high a temperature or voltage is detected. Additionally, the D500S uses digitally signed firmware, making it resistant to BadUSB malware and Brute Force attacks. Always-on Brute Force Protection prevents multiple password attempts and cryptographically clears memory when the number of attempts exceeds the allowed number.

The device also offers multiple password support, which allows you to access your data using an administrator, user, or one-time recovery password. The administrator can reset a user's password and create a one-time recovery password to allow the user to access their data if they forget their password.

The D500S can operate in traditional compound password or pass phrase mode2. Traditional Complex Password mode allows you to enter a password of 8-16 characters using 3 of 4 character types. The password expression can be from 10 to 128 characters long. The ability to use a sentence with spaces, a list of words, or even a fragment of song lyrics makes it easier to remember such a meaningful and at the same time very secure password. The FBI recommends using multi-word password phrases of 15 or more characters because they are harder to guess and easier to remember than complex passwords.

The D500S is the first on the market to offer dual hidden partition functionality, which allows the administrator to create two secure, custom-sized partitions for the administrator and user. The resulting hidden file store can be used to share files on the user's partition if necessary. When using unknown systems or sharing storage, hidden file stores that can only be accessed in certain ways keep your data safe while remaining invisible.

Using a special key sequence, the administrator can enter the Crypto-Erase password, which cryptographically deletes data from the memory and resets it to prevent unauthorized access.

To reduce errors when entering the password, a preview option (eye symbol) is available on all screens. The virtual English keyboard function is also useful, as it protects passwords from software that records keystrokes (keylogger) or screen content (screenlogger).

The D500S memory also supports two levels of read-only (write-protect) modes. Both the administrator and the user can set the session to read-only mode to protect memory from malware on unknown systems. The administrator can also enable general read-only mode, which will remain active until the memory is reset.

In addition to security, it also ensures high data reading speed. The memory has a unique 8-digit serial number stored in the device, engraved on the housing and available as a barcode that can be scanned for registration or audit purposes.

Kingston IronKey D500SM Memory (M = Managed) requires the use of SafeConsole5 software. It allows for centralized management of access and use of multiple memory devices in a large company or government institution. An optional managed memory version is also available with customization options.
